Chapter Eighteen

Kit didn’t see a single soul the entire day as he traveled south toward the human capital city. He would occasionally see a flash of light in the woods to the side of the road, or hear the cries of dying orcs coming from the gloom, but he didn’t encounter any resistance that day.

Twilight was beginning to descend when Kit decided to stop for the night and set up camp. He had made good time using the road and should be able to make it back within a day or two at the pace he was making. He was feeling a bit unnerved that he hadn’t seen anybody traveling the road, as this was the main trade route to the Fae lands and had always seen brisk trade in the past. It wasn’t until Kylie flopped down in the dirt next to him a half hour later as he was removing his dinner from the fire that he discovered why.

“Did you make anything for me? I’m famished,” the fairy said, lying down dramatically in the dirt. “We took out half a dozen orc ambushes that had been set for people traveling along the road. Most of them had already ambushed tradesmen, killing them and stealing their stuff. They are probably grabbing everyone they could find and looking for the helmet. It’s a shame too—what do they think, a lone old man with two teeth would be transporting a magical helmet in a barely functioning wagon pulled by a half-dead horse? Most of those merchants that were killed barely had anything. There was no need for them to die.”

“Where are your sisters? Shouldn’t they be here too?”

“They are off in the woods being professional,” Kylie said, making quotation marks with her hands as she said it. “Candy said we couldn’t do our job properly if we sat here chatting with you.”

“Why are you here then?” Kit asked with a cocked eyebrow.

“I’m on break. Candy never said we couldn’t come over on break, so here I am. Now give me some of that food—keeping you safe is hard work.” Kylie inched closer to him and poked at the food he had taken off the fire and set on a plate. “What is this stuff? It smells good, but looks kinda gross.”

“I killed a rabbit a little ways back. Nothing so good as a nice, plump, roasted rabbit at the end of a long day. You want to try some?”

“I don’t know, we don’t really eat meat. Some say it’s murder and all that garbage. Those Fae are clueless though, anything you take and eat that is alive, or was alive, is murder—plants included. In order to live, something else has to die, that’s just a fact of life. The reason I don’t eat meat much is because there aren’t a whole lot of meaty animals smaller than me. If I killed a rabbit, I would never be able to finish it before it went bad. So normally we stick to berries and what not.
